ethan murphy

about

Ethan Murphy is a photographer born and raised in St. John’s, Newfoundland. He holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Photography Studies from Toronto Metropolitan University. Specificity of place is at the core of Murphy’s work and is conceived by a fluctuating perspective acquired from leaving and returning to the island of Newfoundland, enabling him to renegotiate his connection to its remote areas post cod moratorium. Murphy's practice visualizes the act of return, probing objects, structures, and landscapes that give form to familial and regional histories as well as new possibilities in Newfoundland and Labrador. His images reflect an act of homage and self-discovery, and function as accumulations of experience, celebrating the unlimited potential of Newfoundland. Murphy has exhibited at the National Gallery of Canada and internationally, he was awarded the New Generation Photography award in 2019.
